The new voice assistant comes on the heels of a Bloomberg report that claims OpenAI is nearing a deal with Apple to put ChatGPT on the iPhone. Forefront is another multi-access AI tool featuring free access to GPT-3.5, Forefront’s in-house tool, and Claude-Instant 1.2. When it first launched, Forefront provided a limited number of free GPT-4 requests (along with Claude 2), but this access has since been removed.

Sources have told The Verge that engineers at Microsoft are already preparing for GPT-5, and expect the model may be available as early as November. These initial Microsoft plans seem to focus on the Azure platform, which is Microsoft’s cloud computing platform. It’s worth noting that while there have been leaks about GPT-5, a spokesperson told The Verge that the company isn’t planning to release a model code-named Orion. It will be able to interact in a more intelligent manner with other devices and machines, including smart systems in the home.

The next popular ChatGPT alternative is Google Gemini, which is a conversational AI model developed by Google AI. It focuses on providing informative and comprehensive responses to user queries across various domains. You don’t have to wait for it to finish talking either, you can just interrupt in real time. The hype is real and there are nearly 40,000 people watching the live stream on YouTube — so hopefully we get something interesting. Sora has probably been the most high-profile product announcement since ChatGPT itself but it remains restricted to a handful of selected users outside of OpenAI. Little is known, but we do know it’s in the later stages of testing, with the possible plan being to pair ChatGPT with a web crawler based search.

In a new peek behind the curtain of its AI’s secret instructions, OpenAI also released a new NSFW policy. OpenAI announced in a blog post that it has recently begun training its next flagship model to succeed GPT-4. The news came in an announcement of its new safety and security committee, which is responsible for informing safety and security decisions across OpenAI’s products. OpenAI is giving users their first access to GPT-4o’s updated realistic audio responses. Mark Chen asked the assistant to translate English to Italian and Italian to English. Based on some of the live demos, the system sure seemed to be moving at speed, especially in the conversational voice mode, but more on that below. With these capabilities, you can upload an entire research study to ChatGPT and ask it to generate a table with certain parameters (always check that the info ChatGPT enters is correct). Then, you ChatGPT App could click on a cell and ask ChatGPT a question about it or prompt it to create a pie chart. The pie chart, which would also be interactive, can be customized and downloaded for use in presentations and documents. It isn’t perfect, and likely won’t be available for several weeks and even then on a limited rollout, but its ability to allow interruptions and live voice-to-voice communication is a major step-up in this space.

In conjunction with o1-preview, OpenAI has also launched the o1-mini model, a more streamlined version designed to offer faster and cheaper reasoning capabilities. It is already available for use in ChatGPT by Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu users gaining access next week. The models are also available via the OpenAI API for developers who qualify for API usage tier 5, though initial rate limits will apply. OpenAI envisions the models being used for a wide range of applications, from helping physicists generate mathematical formulas for quantum optics to assisting healthcare researchers in annotating cell sequencing data.

A free ChatGPT account will give you access to the chatbot’s data analysis capabilities. When you upload your data, ChatGPT can instantly create interactive charts and tables to help you visualize the information. It operates on the same level of capabilities as GPT-4 (which is still only available to paying users) but is much better at processing text, voice, and images. Between the more human-like, natural-sounding voice and Google Lens-esque vision capabilities, a lot of impressive features were revealed in a surprisingly fast series of live demos.

The company is being cautious, however — for its voice and video tech, it’s beginning with “a small group of trusted partners,” citing the possibility of abuse. GPT-4o can also answer questions about photos and desktop screenshots. OpenAI says that down the road, 4o may be capable of even more complicated tasks, such as watching live sports and explaining the rules involved.

Recently, there has been a flurry of publicity about the planned upgrades to OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI-powered chatbot and Meta’s Llama system, which powers the company’s chatbots across Facebook and Instagram. AI tools, including the most powerful versions of ChatGPT, still have a tendency to hallucinate. They can get facts incorrect and even invent things seemingly out of thin air, especially when working in languages other than English. AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is the concept of machine intelligence on par with human cognition.

This is where AI models only have information up to the end of their training— usually 3-6 months before launch. I’d speculate that OpenAI is considering these prices for enterprise customers rather than regular genAI users. Whatever the case, the figure implies OpenAI made big improvements to ChatGPT, and that they might be available soon — including the GPT-5 upgrade everyone is waiting for. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the latest news and rumors surrounding ChatGPT-5 and all things OpenAI. It may be a several more months before OpenAI officially announces the release date for GPT-5, but we will likely get more leaks and info as we get closer to that date. The only potential exception is users who access ChatGPT with an upcoming feature on Apple devices called Apple Intelligence.

He also said that OpenAI would focus on building better reasoning capabilities as well as the ability to process videos. I’ll remind you that Google wants to bring better reasoning and deep research to Gemini this fall. For instance, OpenAI is among 16 leading AI companies that signed onto a set of AI safety guidelines proposed in late 2023. OpenAI has also been adamant about maintaining privacy for Apple users through the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence. Given recent accusations that OpenAI hasn’t been taking safety seriously, the company may step up its safety checks for ChatGPT-5, which could delay the model’s release further into 2025, perhaps to June.

This comes as a part of OpenAI’s public program to award grants to fund experiments in setting up a “democratic process” for determining the rules AI systems follow. “For commerce, the implications of a more advanced LLM (large language model) like GPT-5 are vast,” Cache Merrill, the founder and CTO of Zibtek, an AI-based software company, told PYMNTS. “We could see significant improvements in customer service bots, offering more coherent and contextually appropriate interactions without human intervention. In digital marketing, content generation could become more sophisticated and tailored, enhancing engagement strategies. However, those users are unable to create their own chatbots, which is arguably the best way to optimize the chatbot for your own specific use case.

This was re-iterated by the company PR team after I pushed them on the topic. However, just because they’re not launching a Google competitor doesn’t mean search won’t appear. It’ll be interesting to see whether OpenAI delivers its big GPT-5 upgrade before Apple enables ChatGPT in iOS 18. We could also see OpenAI launch more third-party integrations with ChatGPT-5. With the announcement of Apple Intelligence in June 2024 (more on that below), major collaborations between tech brands and AI developers could become more popular in the year ahead. OpenAI may design ChatGPT-5 to be easier to integrate into third-party apps, devices, and services, which would also make it a more useful tool for businesses.

OpenAI initially unveiled plugins to connect to ChatGPT third-party applications, including access to real-time information on the web and links to popular applications, such as Expedia, OpenTable, Kayak, and more. However, as of March 19, OpenAI stopped allowing users to install new plugins or start new conversations with existing ones, replacing these connections with custom GPTs. When OpenAI first launched DALL-E 2, the text-to-image generator was available to the public for free with a credit allowance that was replenished every month. However, after launching its most advanced text-to-image model, DALL-E 3, the company discontinued access to DALL-E 2.

Screenshots provided to Ars Technica found that ChatGPT is potentially leaking unpublished research papers, login credentials and private information from its users. An OpenAI representative told Ars Technica that the company was investigating the report. As part of a test, OpenAI began rolling out new “memory” controls for a small portion of ChatGPT free and paid users, with a broader rollout to follow. The controls let you tell ChatGPT explicitly to remember something, see what it remembers or turn off its memory altogether. Note that deleting a chat from chat history won’t erase ChatGPT’s or a custom GPT’s memories — you must delete the memory itself. OpenAI is opening a new office in Tokyo and has plans for a GPT-4 model optimized specifically for the Japanese language.
